I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University

I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University is the first, oldest and largest medical university in Russia, which is 250 years of age. The history of establishment of this university is connected with the history of medicine and establishment of the Ministry of Healthcare and Medical Industry. The university was founded in 1755 as the Imperial Moscow University in the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna at the suggestion of the great Russian scientists Lomonosov and Shuvalov.

During its long history, the university changed its name several times. However, the first educational classes were given in 1758. In 1930, it became an independent educational institution, and since 2010, upon changing its name and structure, the university functions under its present-day name I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

The university’s motto is “Primus inter pares”, meaning “first among equals”, which shows the fact that founders of many medical educational centers in Russia are graduates of I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

The first lecturers of the Faculty of Medicine were foreigners, and only in the 60s of the 18^th century they were replaced by young Russian scientists. For many years, the university has been considered the oldest medical educational institution in Russia and one of the largest innovator of medical education and research, which provides quality medical aid, as well as promotes medical and pharmaceutical achievements in Russia. At present, the Rector of the university is Petr Glybochko.

According to the 2015 ranking, published by the Expert RA agency in Kommersant newspaper, in comparison with other competitors, this university ranked first among the Russian medical higher educational institutions in terms of the level of training of specialists and fourth-largest university in Moscow.
