The university played an instrumental role in the formation and development of the aerospace and aviation industry in the history of Russia.

March 5, 1932 can be considered the date of establishment and beginning of work of this educational center. It was then that Kazan Aviation Institute was established by decree of the Chief Directorate of Aviation Industry of the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry based on the Aerodynamics Department of the Kazan State University. In 1934, there were set up the Aerodynamics Department, the Aircraft Construction Department and the laboratory of the Institute of Physics. In 1945, there was set up the first Jet Engine Department in the USSR, and in 1951 there were set up the Faculties of Aerospace and Telecommunication Equipment Production.

In 1950s, the institute achieved significant success in the production of the body of airplanes, optimization processes, production of aero engines, advanced technological processes and setting up of advanced faculties and institutes (the Faculty of Computing Systems and Management Systems, Economics and Management). In 1967, it was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for its valuable services in training of specialists and research development.

Thereafter, in 1992, Kazan Aviation Institute was changed into Kazan National Technical University and awarded with the name of Andrei Tupolev (an aircraft designer of the Soviet period).

The university has been working globally since 1937, and since 1947 it has been officially admitting foreign students from all over the world. It should be noted that in 2014 German-Russian Institute of Advanced Technologies was initially set up in the composition of Russian educational institutions.

By now, the university has become one of the most advanced educational institutions in Russia and the world in the area of aerospace and aviation industry and aircraft construction, which includes 7 research institutes, 45 curriculum and instruction divisions, 11 scientific and educational centers, 2 colleges, 48 research laboratories and 8 active branches.

At present, at this educational institution there study and work around 15,000 students and more than 3,000 lecturers, engineers and lecturers of the scientific council of this institution. Many graduates of the university have been able to provide valuable services for this important Russian industry at the enterprises named after Sukhoi and Tupolev (for example, Simonov, the chief designer of fighter aircraft Su-27).

Nowadays the university has expanded its activities in the aviation industry and is actively engaged in other industries, that is why it is one of the leading higher education institutions in the ranking of Russian industrial higher educational institutions.
