N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod

N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1916 as People’s University of Nizhny Novgorod.

Development of the higher education systems became the basis for the State University of Nizhny Novgorod in Nizhny Novgorod oblast. In 1930, in Nizhny Novgorod oblast there were established six universities. Those institutions included the specialties as follows:

• the Machine-Building Institute
• Chemical Engineering
• the Teaching Institute
• the Agricultural Institute
• the Architectural Institute
• the Medical Institute

In 1932, Lobachevsky University set up the Faculties of Physics, Mechanics, Biology, Botany, Chemistry and Mathematics.

N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest higher education institutions in Russia. It is also known for conduct of the research in order to satisfy needs of the society and the state. This university prioritizes innovation and research and has always been a pioneer in this area. In 1945, at the university there was set up the Academic Chair of Radio Physics. That was for the first time in the period of the Soviet Union. In 1963, at the university, there was also set up for the first time in the Russian Federation the Faculty of Medicine. In the same year, there was set up the Faculty of Mathematics and Calculations.

N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod was used as the basis for electronics and information technologies.

Institutes of N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod

N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod is the founder of the institutes as follows:

• the Institute of Physicotechnical Research
• the Institute of Chemical Research
• the Research Institute of Radio Physics
• the Institute of Mechanical Research
• the Institute of Molecular Biology and Regional Environmental Research
• the Research Institute of Living System
• the Institute of Strategic Research

N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod also founded the first Faculty of Management and Business, which by now has become the Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship. Besides, it was the first to bring technology and entrepreneurship into the Russian science and engineering and trains teachers at small institutions.

In 1998, Lobachevsky State University set up a research center for nanotechnologies (solid structures) thanks to the practical achievements in this area. The equipment of those centers is unique, which have 4 laboratories. In 2007, there was set up the Center of Research and Developments in the area of Nanotechnologies.

Achievements of N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod

In those two centers, there were recorded new technologies of research and inventions. The university has also been developing the innovative economy in the region. In 1999, there was set up the center Unf Typhlo information, which became the first specialized computer center in Russia.

In this complex, in 2003, Vitaly Ginzburg received the Nobel Prize in physics. From 1945 to 1961, he was also running the radio publications group of the Radio Physics Academic Chair. In 2004, the university was the first university in Russia, which introduced the Wi-Fi technology for wireless access to the Internet in its campus. The first International Faculty of the university was set up in 2005. In 2005, at the university there was set up the faculty for foreign students. On that faculty there study some hundreds of bachelors and masters from 75 other countries. In 2006, this university won in the competition of the Education national project among 16 other leading Russian universities.
