It is one of the most famous educational centers in Russia, which is particularly popular among students due to availability of almost any educational specialties.

Foundation of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia

The Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was founded on February 5, 1960, and on February 22, 1961 it was named Patrice Lumumba University after one of the figures leading the struggle of African people for independence. The first Rector of the University was the outstanding Soviet man of science, Professor Sergey Rumiantsev, who ran the university until 1970.

From the very beginning of creation of the classes for Russian Language teaching for foreign students, there were established six faculties, which were gradually expanded. In 1965, there was the first group, which graduated from the university, of 228 young specialists from 47 countries of the world. Soon thereafter, in 1966, there was commenced construction of a new educational complex in the South-West of Moscow.

Within the period from 1970 to 1993, the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia became a famous large educational and scientific center in the world, in which merely in 1975 there studied around 56,000 specialists, including 4,250 graduates from 89 countries of the world.

In 1992, by decision of the Government of the Russian Federation the university was renamed into the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia. At present, representatives of the Government of the Russian Federation are the founders of this higher educational institution.

In the 1990s, there were also established new faculties: environmental sciences, economics, law, linguistics and philosophy, humanities and social sciences, foreign languages, international economics and business, remote education, hotel business and tourism, gravitation and cosmology.

At present, the Rector of the university is Professor Vladimir Filippov, who back in the old days held the post of the Minister of Education of Russia and was an education advisor.

At present, at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia there study around 27,000 students from about 150 countries. The number of the university’s employees is more than 4,500 persons, including 2,300 lecturers, among whom there are more than 500 professors.

Position of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia in the world ranking

In the 2013, 2014 and 2015 world rankings, the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was included in the list of top 500 best universities of the world, and there were only ten universities from Russia. Besides, according to the ranking by the Interfax agency, every year the university ranks 4^th-6^th among more than 1,000 Russian higher educational institutions. It also ranked seventh in the 2013 ranking among the universities of Russia, countries of the former Soviet Union and the Baltic countries and ranks first in terms of internationality.

Campus of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia

The university’s dormitories are located near the main building in the Southwest of Moscow in the campus. The dormitories’ buildings include 14 separate building blocks, which are located along a small forest with a lake at the end and near a metro station.

In the area of the campus, there are an around-the-clock police station, several hair salons, a supermarket, a bicycle and auto parking lot, a computer service center, several Internet Cafes and a lot of restaurants, which fit every taste and make the atmosphere totally multinational.

In front of the campus, there are a clinic and the university hospital, and it is ready to provide medical services to the students round the clock. Besides, from the moment of admission to the university, all the students are obliged to undergo the medical examination and test course and to receive a medical record twice a year during mastering of a certain program at the university.

Near the campus and the main building of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, there is a large sports and health center for conduct of sports programs to the students, where the sportspeople, who won World Champion titles, were training.
