Russian State Hydrometeorological University (Saint Petersburg)

It is the oldest and the sole higher education institution, which specializes in hydrometeorology, in Russia, and which is located in Saint Petersburg.

History of the university: First years

By the end of the 20s of the last century, there was a lack of qualified hydrologists. That was a motivation to establish a suitable educational institution. In 1930, there was set up Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute.

The greatest scientists of that time were invited to work on the development of the university. They developed the first curricula and set up laboratories. From the first days at this institute, there was conducted research. In 1941, because of World War II, the university was evacuated to Leninabad, where it existed for only two years. In 1943, the university moved back to Moscow, and in 1944, it moved to Leningrad. At the end of the war, the educational institution was reorganized into Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute.

Further development and our times

The first years of existence in Leningrad were very difficult, because many qualified teachers remained in Moscow. To teach the students, the university invited employees of the hydrometeorological organizations, which existed in the city.

In 1960, in the neighboring village there was created an educational camp for the students to undergo practical training.

In 1969, the second building of the university opened its doors to students.

At present, the institute is known as Russian State Hydrometeorological University. In 1998, this university was granted its status thanks to participation in the quality training of students. Currently, the university has been working on the quality of the education. The educational institution intends to improve it and to make the conditions for work, training and conduct of scientific research more favorable.
