Saint Petersburg Mining University

It is one of the oldest scientific centers and the first technical and engineering university in Russia, which was built under the supervision of Empress Catherine the Great in Saint Petersburg.

The Mining University is one of the best universities in Saint Petersburg and the first technical higher education institution in Russia. On October 21, 1773 Empress Catherine the Great, relying on the ideas of Peter the Great and famous Russian scientist Lomonosov, ordered to establish the Mining Engineering School to develop the activities of the mining plants and to train specialists for those objects.

In 1824, more than 500 graduates entered the labor market. In 1817, there was established the Russian Mining Association, one of the oldest societies in the world.

In 1825, under the institute, there was established the oldest magazine in the world on mining industry, where they published scientific and technical articles by prominent figures such as Pafnuty Chebyshev, Pavel Anosov, Mendeleev and many more.

With new rules and possibilities in 1924, the institute became the Polytechnic University, which trained experienced scientific employees and qualified and professional people in the area of geology, mining and metallurgy. In 2009, the university was renamed into the National Research Institute.

At present, at the university there study 16,500 students on eight faculties with 97 various majors, such as mining and metallurgy, oil and gas, geology, urban and industrial construction.

Prominent graduates of the university

Among the prominent specialists, who were graduates of this university, there were Alexander Karpinsky (the first elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences), known for his Geology Encyclopedia, Evgraf Fedorov (discoverer of the crystal research method in mining), Kornakov (discoverer of the method of physics and chemistry in metallurgy). Dimitri Nalivkin, a prominent geologist and paleontologist.

According the QS International Ranking System in the area of mining engineering and related industries, as published on March 8, 2017, Saint Petersburg Mining University ranks 15^th among the world’s universities.

The university has been admitting students since 1946, and since then at the university there have studied more than 6,000 foreign students from over 60 countries of the world, and their number has been increasing from year to year.

Various possibilities of the university, including modern classrooms, computer centers, well-equipped laboratories, the specialized library and many other things, attract students, who wish to study at universities with modern international conditions. At present, Professor Vladimir Litvinenko is the Rector of the university.
